DIY Frame & Hemp Photo Board!

DIY Hemp and Frame Memory Board

Make your own memory board out of an old frame, staples and hemp cord!

You will need:
  • Frame (any size - the thrift store is a great place to score frames at bargain prices!)
  • Staple Gun
  • Staples
  • Hemp Cord or Picture Frame Wire
  • Clothespins
  • Scissors
  • Paint & Wax (optional)

Paint your frame with a no-sanding-required paint. I never sand any wood from the thrift store -  if the paint contains lead, sanding releases lead dust into the air!

Use either Annie Sloan, Valspar Ultra Flat All-in-one Paint + Primer, or a primer for all surfaces like Zinsser.

I used three coats of Ultra White and one coat of black. The edges were distressed (while the top coat was still wet) with a bit of alcohol on an old t-shirt. After that, I added a layer of Minwax furniture paste.

Get out your staple gun, staples and hemp cord.

Hemp cord can be found in the jewelry section of the craft store. I chose to use Hemp because it seems least likely to stretch and sag with time. You may choose to use picture frame wire. Picture wire can be found in the hardware section, usually near the wall hooks and command strips. It's wire that looks like it's been twisted together into a thin rope.

Turn your frame over. You'll be stapling the BACK of the frame.

Remove glass or other inserts, if necessary.

Follow the arrows in the picture, below. Staple the hemp TWICE in each spot to ensure that the cord won't slip out of the staple!

Some frames are made to be thinner in places -  make sure to only staple through the thickest parts of the frame - usually the furthest outside edge. The frame may break if you staple through the thin areas!

Cut the cord after the last staple.

Use clothespins to attach pictures, cards or verses to your new memory board!

The clothespins will seem more stable if they're used at/near where two lines of hemp meet. They'll also settle down when you hang the frame on a wall - the wall will keep them from twisting and turning!
